I’ll go through the advantages of creating a DIY water tank and demonstrate each step in building one from scratch.
In this lesson, I’ll describe the camera and lighting I use to capture the aqueous images. Then I’ll teach you how I set everything up.
Learn the pros and cons of DIY tanks vs. store-bought aquarium-style tanks.
In this lesson, I’ll take you through the inks I use to create amazing aqueous effects.
In this first shooting lesson, learn the camera and lighting settings and why those settings matter when it comes to capturing the best images.
You’ll learn how the ink delivery technique affects the type of cloud that forms in the tank, which is important when you start adding other objects in the tank.
Learn how the various inks behave differently and how by diluting them and introducing them in the right way will give you the shape you are after.
Learn a DIY way to introduce multiple inks to the tank as we shoot blue and yellow ink against a black background.
Learn what changes would need to be made to shoot with a more shallow depth of field and it’s not as simple as adjusting camera settings.
Learn how best to illuminate the background and still retain the necessary short flash duration to capture crisp images.
Changing the ink to a vibrant red really makes the images pop. Now it’s time to add different subjects in the water tank to combine with the ink cloud.
We start off with the same piece of jewelry but change the ink to a blend of white, blue, and pearlescent.
Learn how to force the streams of ink to collide in the tank to create interesting combinations in anticipation of adding a subject to the mix.
Learn how to clean the tank and clear bubbles from the interior surface when the tank is filled with water.
In this lesson, I’ll teach you how to deal with internal reflections when using a glass tank. Then you’ll learn how to shoot a small bottle in the tank with orange and blue inks clouds.
In the last practical shooting lesson, I’ll teach you a slightly different approach to supporting the tank and lighting the ink clouds on a black background.
In the first post-production video, learn to work with the flower and ink cloud and bring the selected images into Adobe Camera Raw for initial processing.
Discover how to improve the flower image by cutting out the composited result, placing it on a background and then adjusting the shadows, highlights, contrast, and colors of the image.
In this lesson learn to process the dual-color ink clouds, apply various techniques to clean up the image before enhancing its overall appearance into a stunning piece of abstract art.
In this post-production lesson and starting off in Adobe Camera Raw learn to perform the initial adjustments before bringing the image into Photoshop.
In the final post-production lesson, discover how to blend several shots in Photoshop to get the best combination of ink clouds from each color.
I’ll teach you my setup for capturing slow-motion video. Learn how to get an amazing video of your underwater photography!
