Why Most Clothing Flat Lays Look Like a Pile of Fabric

I once got a call from a friend who had been running an Etsy shop for eight months. Good products, reasonable prices, almost zero sales. She wanted advice on her marketing strategy. I asked her to send me her product photos first.

Every single image was a flat lay shot on her carpet. The fabric was wrinkled, the lighting was flat and yellow, and the clothes looked sad. Not because they were bad clothes. Because nothing was pulling them into shape, the light was killing the texture, and the camera angle was making a size small blouse look like a tarp. I told her the photos were the only problem. She was skeptical. Three months after she reshot everything, her revenue had doubled. That was the moment I stopped assuming people knew what was broken in their own images and started teaching.

Clothing is one of the hardest product categories to shoot on a flat surface. Unlike a candle or a mug, fabric has no structure of its own. It collapses. It creases. It absorbs light unevenly. Getting it right is not about having expensive gear. It is about understanding exactly what the camera is recording and controlling each variable before you press the shutter.

The Physics Behind Flat Fabric and Why Your Light Is the Main Problem

When you shoot a three-dimensional product, shape communicates itself. A ceramic bowl tells you it is round. Clothing on a flat surface has to fake depth entirely through light and styling.

Flat, direct light, like the built-in flash on a phone or an overhead ceiling bulb, kills texture. It bounces straight back at the lens and everything looks the same tone. You want a soft, directional light source hitting the fabric at a low angle, roughly 30 to 45 degrees from the surface. This grazes across the weave of the fabric and creates micro-shadows that make texture visible. That is the difference between a sweater that looks cozy and one that looks like gray plastic.

For window light, position your flat lay surface so the window is to the side, not above. A north-facing window between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Los Angeles gives me the most consistent diffused light with almost no color cast. If you are shooting under artificial light, two softboxes at 45 degrees on opposite sides, with one at about half the power of the other, gives you controlled directionality without harsh shadows. A 2:1 ratio, key to fill, is where I start for most garments.

Setting Up the Shot: Surface, Shape, and the Steamer You Should Already Own

Your background matters more than your camera. I shoot most clothing flat lays on foam core boards, either white or a muted color that complements the product. Foam core is flat, cheap (around $3 a sheet at any art supply store), and does not introduce texture that competes with the fabric. Do not shoot on wood unless the grain is intentional and the clothing is a lifestyle product.

Before anything goes on the surface, every single item gets steamed. Not ironed, steamed. A handheld garment steamer costs around $25 and removes wrinkles without crushing the fabric structure. I use mine for about two minutes per piece. This step alone will change how your flat lays read.

For the actual styling, use tissue paper, cardboard inserts, or foam rolled into tubes to prop up collars, sleeves, and hems from underneath. You are building the illusion of a body inside the clothing. Sleeves should have a gentle curve, not lie completely flat. Fold them at the elbow at roughly a 45-degree angle. A shirt collar that is popped or slightly lifted reads as confident. A collapsed collar reads as secondhand.

Camera Settings and Shooting Angle for Clean, Consistent Results

Shoot directly overhead, 90 degrees perpendicular to the surface. Any angle introduces perspective distortion and makes one end of the garment look wider than the other. I use a tripod with a center column that extends horizontally, a boom-style setup. If you do not have one, you can clamp your phone or camera to a shelving unit overhead.

For camera settings, I shoot in manual mode. Aperture at f/8 gives me edge-to-edge sharpness across the whole garment without the focus falloff you get at f/2.8. Shutter speed depends on your light source. With a softbox, I am usually at 1/125. ISO stays at 100 to keep the file clean. I shoot RAW files at full resolution, which on my Sony A7 III gives me 24.2 megapixels. That file size matters for e-commerce because most platforms allow zoom functionality and a compressed JPEG shot at ISO 800 will fall apart under that kind of scrutiny.

Color calibration is non-negotiable for clothing. Customers are making purchasing decisions based on whether a blue is navy or cobalt. I include an X-Rite ColorChecker card in my first frame of every session and neutralize it in Lightroom before touching anything else. This takes about 30 seconds and removes the guesswork from every image that follows.

The Edit That Keeps Colors Honest and Backgrounds Clean

In Lightroom, after calibrating from the ColorChecker, I run a consistent preset that adjusts clarity to +10 (adds fabric texture), texture to +15, and drops dehaze to -5 to keep the whites from going clinical. I export for e-commerce at 2000 pixels on the long side, sRGB, 72 DPI, JPEG at quality 90. That file size, usually around 800KB to 1.2MB, is large enough for platform zoom features and small enough to load fast.

If the background needs to be white rather than off-white, I bring the whites slider up until the foam core reads at 255, 255, 255 in the histogram. I do not use the auto-white function because it sometimes pulls the fabric along with the background.

The single most important thing you can do for a clothing flat lay is steam the garment and get the light directional before you pick up the camera. Everything else is refinement. Those two steps do more work than any editing trick I know.
